HGTV adopts New Orleans as the home base to renovation queen Holly Baker’s new show – New Orleans Reno
(formerly Big Easy Reno
). Holly is a self-made, avid-DIYer that loves to share her expertise and love for design, architecture and doing it all on a budget.
Here’s a sneak peek of Holly’s pro-tips. Find out more from Holly all weekend long at the NOLA Home Show.
Q: What are your best tips to help homeowners with curb appeal year-round?
: "Whatever the season, just doing seasonally appropriate maintenance goes a long way! I also love adding exterior lighting for the darker months. Consider doing portable stake spot lights to light up certain trees around your house to add visual warmth to your property from the street."
Q: What should homeowners look for when it comes to working with a contractor or interior designer?
: "Right off the bat you should feel like you jive! Different homeowners have different levels of what they want control of – some just let you do your thing, others want to approve all decisions and micromanage the job. Both are fine ways to proceed, but it’s always best to be upfront with your expectations of your involvement, and whether you are wanting to be hands on or off - you should have a high level of trust with who you are hiring."
Q: What is your favorite space to makeover and why?
: "For renovating, I love doing kitchens because the before and afters are always the most dramatic! But for decorating, I love dining rooms. It’s such a fun space to mix styles and have some fun."
Q: What’s one thing you think people should splurge on?
: "A statement light fixture. A standard ceiling mount light is fine and functional, but sourcing a light that builds off the design for the room makes a big impact. It doesn’t have to be an expensive light, but just incorporating something other than a generic light is worth the investment!"
Q: How can you tell what has staying power and what doesn’t?
: "I think it’s always best to incorporate trends in ways that require the least amount of commitment (money or time depending on your circumstances), like pillows, linens or art. However, if it’s something that speaks to who you are, go wild! Sometimes we don’t how much we love something until we see it as a trend and loving it even once the trend is over is okay. Above all, your home should reflect YOU!"
